Vpmsece4 dll

If you are running Outlook especially the 2003 version you may at some time find a vpmsece4.dll error showing up. Usually this happens if you are also running an anti-virus program from Symantec. This is an error that is associated with their software.

The full error message says that the vpmsece4.dll add-in cannot be loaded. However, you can still read your emails in Outlook. This seems to be a problem that is very difficult for people to solve.

According to Symantec, this is just a glitch in the system and when the program was loaded the first time it created the error message. The best way to resolve this issue is to use the “Detect and Repair” information that is in the Help section of the Symantec Anti-virus program.

If you get the error message that the program is “unable to load the vpmsece4.dll this may be pointing to the fact that your computer is out of memory or that you are missing a .dll file that is important to it opening the program.  It still should be repaired by using the “Detect and Repair” feature.

How To Fix The Problem

The first thing to do when you use the problem is to go to the Add-in Manager, in Outlook. This will take you to a list of add-ins and you will see Symantec Antivirus 10 (if you have a younger version of this program there is a different way to fix the problem).  You will need to uncheck that box.

The next thing to do is to click on the bottom of the drop down box where you will see the word “Manage”. You will want to click on all the choices in that section. This should fix the problem. However, there are occasions when this does not fix the vpmsece4.dll problem and in those cases you will have to delete any “Extend.dat” files that you can find. Once you find them and delete them you will have to restart your computer in order to make the new changes take effect.

How To Find and Fix the Extend.dat Files

There are basically two ways to find and remove these. You can either use a command prompt or you can use the search feature. Here is the way using the search feature:

In the first one you will close Outlook if you have it open.

Make sure that Windows is showing “show hidden and system folders.” If it is not, you will want to make sure that you show this in the toolbar. Next you will go to the Windows taskbar and search for the files you will need. When it asks for the name of the file, you will put in Extend.dat, and then tell the computer to “search now.” As you wait for the search you will see one or several copies of the extend.dat show up; delete all of these when the search stops. You will have to restart the computer for the changes to take effect.
